Getting Started

What exactly is Solvent?
Solvent is a conscious finance app that helps you track spending, pay off debt, and save for goals. It's built for people who have a complicated relationship with money and want to change it. Unlike most finance apps that connect to your bank and show you what you already spent, Solvent uses manual entry as the core practice. Every transaction you enter is a moment of awareness—a chance to pause and make conscious choices about your money.
Who is Solvent for?
Solvent is for anyone who wants a more intentional relationship with money. That includes: • People working to pay off debt • Freelancers and contractors who need to track business finances • Anyone who's tried budgeting apps and found them unhelpful • People interested in mindful or conscious approaches to money • Those in financial recovery programs looking for supportive tools If you've ever felt like money controls you instead of the other way around, Solvent was built for you.
How is Solvent different from other finance apps?
Three main differences: Manual entry is the feature, not a limitation. Most apps try to automate everything. We believe the act of manually logging a purchase creates awareness that automation destroys. We focus on behavior change, not just tracking. Showing you graphs of past spending doesn't change future behavior. Solvent is designed around practices that actually rewire your relationship with money. We include the emotional side. Goals have a "Why" field. We acknowledge money shame instead of adding to it. The app is built on principles from financial recovery, not just spreadsheet logic.
Do I need to be in a recovery program to use Solvent?
Not at all. While Solvent is built on principles that have helped people in recovery programs, it's designed for anyone who wants a more conscious relationship with money. You don't need any specific background or affiliation.

How It Works

Why doesn't Solvent connect to my bank?
On purpose. When you manually enter a transaction, you create a tiny pause—a moment of awareness. That friction is the behavioral change mechanism. Apps that auto-sync from your bank show you what happened. Solvent helps you be present when spending happens. That's a fundamentally different approach, and it's what makes real change possible. Think of it like this: a diet app that only tells you what you already ate doesn't help you eat differently tomorrow. Solvent is about building awareness in the moment.
How long does it take to log a transaction?
About ten seconds. Open the app, select a category, enter the amount, done. We've designed Quick Entry to be as fast as possible while still creating that moment of awareness.
Can I import transactions from my bank?
Yes—if you're on a paid plan. You can download a CSV from your bank and import it into Solvent. The import tool auto-detects formats from major banks. This is useful for catching up on past transactions or doing a monthly reconciliation. But we encourage using Quick Entry for real-time awareness whenever possible.
What's a spending plan?
A spending plan is zero-based budgeting: you assign every dollar of income to a category before you spend it. Income minus planned expenses equals zero. Every dollar has a job. Then, throughout the month, you track actual spending against your plan. The gap between planned and actual isn't failure—it's information. It shows you where reality differs from intention.
How does the debt payoff feature work?
Enter your debts (balances, interest rates, minimum payments), and Solvent shows you two strategies: • Snowball: Pay off smallest balance first for quick psychological wins • Avalanche: Pay off highest interest first to minimize total interest paid You can run what-if scenarios to see how extra payments affect your debt-free date. Watching that date move closer is incredibly motivating.
What can the AI assistant do?
The AI assistant can answer questions about your money in plain English. Ask things like: • "How much did I spend on food this month?" • "Am I on track with my spending plan?" • "What's my biggest expense category?" • "When will I be debt-free if I pay an extra $100/month?" It has access to your accounts, transactions, goals, spending plans, and debt information. It's like having a knowledgeable friend who knows your numbers and can answer questions without judgment.

Pricing & Plans

Yes. The free tier is genuinely useful—not a crippled demo or a 14-day trial. You get 10 accounts, 1,000 transactions per month, a spending plan, unlimited savings goals, and the full debt dashboard. Many people never need to upgrade. We believe the core tools for conscious spending should be accessible to everyone.

Privacy & Security

How do you protect my data?
We use bank-level encryption (AES-256) for all data in transit and at rest. Our database has row-level security, which means even our own team can't access your financial data. We're hosted on secure, SOC 2 compliant infrastructure. We follow industry best practices for application security.
Do you sell my data?
Never. We don't sell data, share data with third parties, or monetize your information in any way. Our business model is simple: you pay for the software. That's it.
Can I export my data?
Yes. You can export all your data anytime from your account settings. Your data belongs to you.
Can I delete my account?
Yes. One click in your account settings. We don't make you call anyone or jump through hoops. Your data is deleted within 30 days (we keep it briefly in case you change your mind).
Who can see my financial data?
Only you. Our row-level security means your data is isolated from other users and from our team. The AI assistant can access your data to answer questions, but that processing happens securely and nothing is stored beyond your account.

Features & Functionality

Does Solvent work on my phone?
Yes. Solvent is a Progressive Web App (PWA), which means it works on any device with a web browser—iPhone, Android, tablet, desktop. No app store required. You can add it to your home screen for an app-like experience. Quick Entry is specifically designed for mobile use.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Quick Entry has offline support. If you log a transaction without internet connection, it's saved locally and syncs when you're back online.
Can I track multiple accounts?
Yes. Free users get 10 accounts, and every paid plan gets unlimited. You can categorize accounts as Personal, Business, or House.
Can I track different currencies?
Yes. You can set your preferred currency in settings. We support multiple currency formats for international users.
Is there a dark mode?
Yes. You can toggle between light and dark mode in settings.
Can I share access with my partner/spouse?
Not currently—each account is individual. Family/shared accounts are on our roadmap. For now, some couples each have their own account and coordinate their spending plans together.

Business Features

Who are the business features for?
Freelancers, contractors, consultants, and solopreneurs who need to track clients, log time, and send invoices—while also managing personal finances. If you work for yourself and want one app that handles both sides of your money, the Freelancer or SME plan is for you.
How does time tracking work?
You can either start a timer while you work, or manually add time entries after the fact. Time is tracked by project and client. At the end of a billing period, you can turn those hours into an invoice with one click.
How does invoicing work?
Create an invoice from your tracked time or manually add line items. Solvent generates a professional PDF you can send to clients. You can track which invoices are paid, pending, or overdue.
Can I keep business and personal money separate?
Yes — this is one of Solvent's strongest business features. Every account and category can be marked as business or personal, and you can switch between Personal, Business, or Both views at any time. The separation happens at the moment of entry, not months later at reconciliation. What you (or your bookkeeper) get is a clean split — not a chart of accounts that's half life, half business. Available on the Freelancer and SME plans.
Does Solvent handle GST?
Yes. On the Freelancer and SME plans you can set up dedicated tax accounts — GST, income tax, provisional tax — and track your GST position from the first transaction, with set-aside so the money is actually there when the return is due. Solvent is built in New Zealand and works with NZ GST, and the same tools work for Australian GST. It's tracking and awareness, not tax advice — your accountant still files the return.
What's the Xero integration?
SME plan users can connect to Xero and sync invoices automatically. When you create an invoice in Solvent, it appears in Xero — and because business/personal separation and category coding happen in Solvent first, what lands in Xero is already clean. This keeps your accounting software up to date without manual data entry.

About Solvent

Who built Solvent?
Solvent is built by Matt at TrustTech Limited in New Zealand. It started as a personal project—a tool Matt needed for his own financial recovery—and grew into something worth sharing.
Why did you build this?
Because nothing else worked. The apps that auto-sync from your bank just showed graphs of failure. Spreadsheets got too complicated to maintain. What was needed was an app that made spending conscious—that used friction intentionally as a tool for awareness. Solvent is built on principles from financial recovery programs, wrapped in software that makes them easier to practice.
Is Solvent profitable? Will it stick around?
We're building Solvent as a sustainable business, not a venture-backed startup chasing growth at all costs. Our goal is profitability through subscriptions from users who find real value in the product. We're committed to the long term. The free tier will always exist. Your data will always be exportable. We're building something meant to last.
